RTI Act 2005 which was celebrated and called as a ‘Mini Constitution’, is luster being lost? At present, in order to implement the above Act, the administrative machinery of Commissioners of RTI was entrusted to IAS cadre officers. Unfortunately, the vacancies are not being filled for a long-long time. As a result, lakhs of RTI applications are awaiting disposal and the applicants thereof are deprived of their legal right to obtain the same. The RTI Act 2005 is a Central Legislation and States are required to implement the same as per the spirit and provisions of the said Central Act 2005. Unfortunately, in Maharashtra, state government for reasons best known to it has not appointed such officers including the Chief Commissioner for more than 2 years and the vacancies are kept in cold storage.
