In recent times, the term ‘Sedition’ is often heard and read at various channels on TV and in almost all newspapers. Initially, we look at the origin of ‘Sedition law’ in India. 1. Origin of ‘Sedition law’ The Sedition Law in India was introduced by the United Kingdom during their reign in India. When we talk about the history of the Sedition Law, it is linked to the Indian freedom movement. Following the Indian independence revolt of 1857, the first attempt was made to codify the criminal law in its current form. Consequently, the Indian Penal Code was introduced in 1860, based on the recommendations of the first Law Commission headed by Lord Macaulay.
